The island of Elisedd lies on the ocean's frontier. It is a land of shield walls and ploughshares, with crowded cities of timber and thatch heaped on crumbling stone. It is a land where the old gods are forgotten and new ones are eyed with suspicion. And magic does not exist.

A lifetime of war has taught Drostan two things: death comes to those who least deserve it and no amount of meditation or monastic discipline can make his mind feel less like a bag full of bats. Drostan’s faith is already thin, so when a deadly plague spreads through the city and beyond, and his power to heal vanishes, it’s all he can do to tend the dying while the other monks wait and pray to the Warrior King.

But Drostan’s mother always said he had the patience of a falling tree, so when the abbot falls ill, waiting around for a warrior god who has left the battlefield is something Drostan can no longer do. With his faith in the balance, he smuggles his dying mentor out of the city to find a cure. What he discovers is that the plague is actually a druid curse intended to purge the human blight.

While tracking the druids, Drostan crosses paths with Tam, a monk cursed with visions of death, and Korvall, a disgraced war chief whose last wish is to die on the battlefield. Along with Drostan, they were the only survivors of a druid cult and now they’re being pulled back together to face an even greater threat: because these druids are not alone. There’s an army on the move and that giant, rotting stag that’s following them, just might be the Keeper of the Netherworld come to open the gates of Hell. But for Drostan, saving the abbot is all that matters. Will the three be able to overcome the demons of their past in order to save their land’s future?
